EA is taking on Pokemon

The founder of EA games, Trip Hawkins, has just recently funded a new game firm, If You Can, a game developing company that is based in London, UK. The new company has employed Ben Geliher, the former lead producer at Mind Candy on Moshi Monsters and he has annouced that one of the first games the company is working on is a project which is a "Monster catching style of RPG" that apparently will rival Nintendo's Pokémon Series!.

Geliher has stated that "The game will be a top down RPG for kids, so very stylized in its look and feel. Think Pokémon, Animal Crossing or The Legend of Zelda for an idea of what would be expected."

What do you think of this? Will it work? Or are they swinging above their weight class but challenging the Pokémon franchise? Let us know in the comments below!

They're specifically targeting towards kids, as opposed to how pokemon is for all ages. I thik that should make it clear.

if he founded a new company (like he's done a few times before) then it ISN'T EA. Mr. James is incredibly irresponsible for writing something so misleading (and using such an awful picture)

I assume this is the source for the quote regarding Pokemon, Zelda, and Animal Crossing:
http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/160744-Looking-for-Developers-and-3D-Artists-%28Cha-and-Enviro%29-for-exciting-new-start-up

However, Geliher did not say this would be a "monster catching style of RPG" (at least, not in this post, and searching for that particular quote string on any search engine only ever leads back to this article, or to a page linking to this article).

Addressing the software developers and 3D artists that would be applying for the listed positions, he said, "The game will be a top down RPG for kids, so very stylised in its look and feel. Think Pokemon, Animal Crossing or The Legend of Zelda for an idea of what would be expected."

Pokemon, Animal Crossing, or The Legend of Zelda is what *his company* would be expecting of *artists who apply*. He is not telling the consumer (us) to "expect" Pokemon, Animal Crossing, or Zelda gameplay. We should not even necessarily expect similar aesthetics; all three series have very different artwork from each other (and of course Zelda has experimented more than the other two with very different artistic styles), so instead of name-dropping he is simply referencing the level of skill that he wants his artists to have and the degree to which the artists will, as a team, try to establish a consistent style throughout the game.

I wonder how many parents will oversee the fact you'll have to register it online. I can already imagine game stores going through pain with "You sold me a game that doesn't work!"
